Youth 0-12 years old will have a “STEM-tastic” summer as the Cowlitz County public libraries in Castle Rock, Kalama, Kelso and Longview present “Fizz Boom, Read!” during their summer library program. Activities include Mad Science, Bits & Bots robotics, Grossology, and more.
The 2014 Summer Reading Program is open to all young people, newborns through young adult, with free events, prizes, story times, a reading club, and more. No library cards are required! Besides a baseball game, a free book and other prizes, readers who make their goal can help their library grow when they “Read a Book into the Collection” and be the first person to check out the book they choose. Pre-readers are invited to join the Read-to-Me portion of the program.
Singer songwriter Nancy Stewart will kick off the season of events with “Sing a Song of Science” at the Kelso Public Library, Wednesday, June 25 at 3:00 p.m. Despicable Me
will be shown Tuesday, July 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kelso Public Library and Mr. Peabody & Sherman
will be shown Wednesday, July 2, at 3:00 p.m. at the Longview Public Library.
The award-winning high school robotics club, Bits & Bots
, will present programs on Tuesday, July 8, at Kelso Public Library at 11:00 a.m., and at Castle Rock Public Library at 2:00 p.m. On Wednesday, July 9 at 3:00 p.m. they will be at the Longview Public Library, and they will appear at the Kalama Public Library on July 10 at 2:00 p.m.
Spin, Boom, Pop!
A Mad Science Production will come to Kelso at 11:00 a.m. and Castle Rock at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16. They will perform at Longview at 10:30 a.m. and at Kalama at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17.
The Cowlitz County Health Department will explore Grossology, Tuesday, July 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Kelso, and 2:00 p.m. at Castle Rock. They will be at Longview on Wednesday, July 23 at 3:00 p.m. and at Kalama on Thursday, July 24 at 2:00 p.m.
The Grand Finale Picnic at the Longview Public Library will be on Tuesday, July 29, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, will have two presentations: React-o-Blast
(outside) and an indoor Science Fair
. Children can sit in the engineer’s seat of the Shay Locomotive and ring the bell, meet Fire Chief Phil Jurmu, and the mascot of the Cowlitz Black Bears while their families enjoy free hot dogs and snow cones.
Thanks to the Cowlitz Literacy Council, readers who complete one reading record will be awarded a sticker providing admission to the Wednesday, July 30 Cowlitz Black Bears vs. the Klamath Gems baseball game. Admission includes the reader, plus three family members!
