School zone photo enforcement to begin at Mark Morris High School on January 6, 2014

Photo enforcement in the Mark Morris High School zone is scheduled to begin on January 6, 2014. Camera testing for the system began on Monday, December 23rd and will be intermittent until the official start date of January 6th. During the testing period the cameras will flash, but no warnings will be issued.

Photo enforcement beginning January 6th will be consistent with the times listed on the school zone signs, which is 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Times for school zones were established in coordination between the Longview School District and the City of Longview. The first 30 days of the program will be a warning period.

In the month of November 2013, Longview Police Department issued photo enforcement speed violations in school zones as follows:

Mint Valley elementary– 93 tickets
CVG elementary– 75 tickets
St. Helen’s elementary– 186 tickets
Olympic elementary– 105 tickets
Kessler elementary– 122 tickets

Longview Police Department continues to see reductions in the number of speeding vehicles in school zones with photo enforcement. An annual report on photo enforcement with 2013 data will be made to the Longview City Council in the spring of 2014. The report will also be published on the police department’s website at http://www.mylongview.com/police.
